A crash on Highway 12 led to the death of 4 people and injured 6 others. The Rio Vista Police Department suspects the incident might have been linked to alcohol.

At around 8:12 p.m. on Wednesday, emergency responders responded to a report of a traffic collision on Highway 12 between Summerset and Church roads.

1 vehicle was a Honda Accord occupied by 3 people, while the other was a Chevrolet Suburban with 7 people on vacation in the U.S. from Mexico.

According to the police, the Honda appeared to be traveling west on Highway 12 when it veered off the roadway to the right, overcorrected, entered the eastbound lane, and collided with the Chevrolet.

The Honda driver and rear passenger were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Rio Vista police have not yet determined the incident as driving under the influence (DUI), but reports show “numerous” open alcoholic beverages found in the Honda.

Rancho Cordova, 20, drove the Honda with a 19-year-old woman, who is said to be the vehicle owner. The third occupant of the car was similarly-aged, according to the police. All 3 occupants of the Honda are declared deceased.

Laura Poiret, a passenger in the Chevrolet, also died. Other passengers remain in the hospital but are in stable condition.
