5 dead in Highway 4 Pittsburg crash

A wrong-way crash killed 5 people on Highway 4 early Thursday morning in Pittsburg. According to the California Highway Patrol, the victims were four people in one vehicle and another driver.  

At around 12:10 a.m., the CHP Contra Costa received a report that a wrong-way driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 4 near Railroad Avenue. The vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, continued traveling eastbound in westbound lanes and collided with a Ford Flex.

The collision occurred west of Loveridge Road and both vehicles sustained major damage. 

According to CHP, both drivers suffered deadly injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Three children in the Hyundai were also pronounced dead on the spot. 

The incident is currently under investigation. 

Anyone who witnesses the crash, the vehicle traveling the wrong way prior to the crash, or events leading up to the crash is asked to contact the Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
