A man was arrested after his 7 dogs attacked a 71-year-old man, mauling him to death, as he was walking to a neighborhood store.

The incident happened on July 18 in Fresno, Texas. 71-year-old Freddy Garcia was walking to a local store at around 1:30 p.m. when he was mauled by 7 dogs. The incident was reported by a witness to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities quickly responded to the scene and found Garcia. He was immediately transported via Life Flight to Memorial Hermann, a hospital in downtown Houston.

Garcia was later pronounced dead from the wounds he suffered during the attack.

Four Bend County Sheriff’s Office said 4 of the dogs were captured shortly after the incident while the other 3 were on the loose for an undisclosed period of time before being captured. All 7 dogs were a pit bull mix.

However, an investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, Fort Bend Animal Control, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office on Friday identified and arrested 47-year-old Samual Cartwright in connection to the mauling incident.

Cartwright remains in custody at the Fort Bend County Jail and has been charged with Attack by Dog resulting in Death — a second-degree felony — and his bond has been set at $100,000.

“This devastating tragedy didn’t have to happen. I extend my deepest condolences to the Garcia family and his neighbors as they adjust to the loss of Mr. Garcia,” Sheriff Fagan said. “Special thanks go out to our deputies, Fort Bend Animal Services Director Rene Vasquez, and Fort Bend District Attorney Brian Middleton for the collaborative work of capturing the dogs and making an arrest.”

The investigation into the mauling death is ongoing.
