Police said a reporter from Bay Area was arrested after he was suspected of killing his mother in Walnut Creek, SFGATE reported.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Nicholas Roth who colleagues said works as a part-time sportswriter for the Bay Area News Group, the owner of several newspapers across the region.

At around 5 in early Monday morning, police received a call from a woman on the 2600 block of Jones Road, claiming that she had been stabbed. The victim was later identified as the 74-year-old Darlene Roth, the mother of the reporter Nicholas Roth, who was later arrested by law enforcers.

Police said the victim has undergone a life-saving procedure at the location but died at a local hospital where she was rushed.

The suspect was also at the location and was arrested by the police for murder allegations.

Currently, Roth is detained at the Contra Costa County jail in Martinez with $1.6 million in bail.

The incident marks the fourth homicide recorded this year in Walnut Creek. In 2020 and 2019, the city has recorded zero homicide cases.
