The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said a man suspected to have sexually attacked a blind woman in Cupertino this year was arrested.
San Mateo resident Bernard Mejia-Ortiz, 29, was identified to be the suspect in the assault, KRON4 reported.
The San Mateo Police Department located him on Thursday, Dec. 2.
Mejia-Ortiz was brought to the San Mateo County Jail where he was booked on sexual assault and false imprisonment charges. He was also placed under San Mateo Police Department’s custody.
Police officers expressed their gratitude to the public who cooperated to have the suspect identified.
Authorities said that on May 5 this year, a legally blind woman was on her way to work close to Stevens Creek Boulevard at North Stelling Road in Cupertino.
The suspect came near her and made flirty statements.
Officials said the blind woman ‘politely denied.’
Later, in broad daylight, the suspect approached the victim in a public parking space, the sheriff’s office said.
There she held the victim without her permission and started assaulting her sexually.
The suspect fled in a car when a couple of witnesses approached.
