On Sunday, an overnight crash on Highway 101 in North Bay left a driver dead.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 3:25 a.m. on the southbound lanes of US-101 south of West Sierra Avenue in Cotati.

Authorities determined that a Honda Civic steered off the roadway, crashed into a freeway sign, and hit a large redwood tree. Firefighters were on the scene and removed the driver from the car.

The driver was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

CHP has not yet released the identity of the male driver as they are waiting to notify his family first.

At this time, it is unknown why or how the Civic lost control or if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

No other vehicles were involved in this crash, CHP said. Officials say if anyone has any information regarding this crash, call the Santa Rosa CHP office at 707-588-1400.
