SF-bound flight nearly dives into the ocean: report

A United Airlines Boeing 777 landed safely at San Francisco Airport after almost plunging into the ocean after its departure from Maui in December 2022. 

On December 18, 2022, a United Airlines Boeing 777 left Kahului Airport amid heavy rain and a flash flood warning. After its departure, it nearly plunged into the ocean before making a full recovery. 

According to reports, It reached around 2,200 feet before starting to dive at about 8,600 feet per minute. It dipped below 775 feet above the ocean. 

The dive and recovery all happened in 45 seconds. The plane eventually landed in San Francisco 27 minutes early. 

A United Airline spokesperson said an internal safety report was filed after the incident and the aircraft was inspected before its next flight. The investigation will lead to more training for the pilots as “Safety remains our highest priority,” the spokesperson said.

Federal investigators and the  National Transportation Safety Board are seeking more information about the incident.
