“We have launched a Special Crash Investigation. NHTSA remains vigilant in overseeing the safety of all motor vehicles and equipment, including automated technologies, and leverages SCI where appropriate,” a spokesperson for the NHTSA said.
The incident occurred on May 5 at about 2L40 a.m. Witnesses said the Tesla rammed into an overturned Mack truck in Fontana. First responders to the scene said the Tesla driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the driver of the Tesla as 35-year-old Stephen Michael Hendrickson from Running Springs, California, the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office said, Bloomberg reported.
