Two people and dog killed in home fire in Walnut Creek

1 min read

Two people died in a townhome fire in Walnut Creek Monday morning. According to the Contra Costa County Fire Department, the two-alarm fire broke out at Countrywood Townhomes.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 6:30 a.m. in a two-story townhome located at 1721 Countrywood Ct. near Treat Boulevard and Bancroft Road. When the fire department arrived, one of the residents told firefighters that two other were still trapped inside the second floor.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Chris Bachman said that the residents — an elderly woman, her adult son, and a small dog — died in the fire.

Around 7:40 a.m., the fire was extinguished and the incident was ruled as accidental. The fire department believes that the fire started on the first floor with smoking materials as the ignition source.

The fire department says that an oxygen machine nearby contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The people who died in the fire reportedly died on the second floor, where the department says the dog’s body was also recovered.
