The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo has been killed in Goma. He died of his wounds after suffering an attack on his convoy, with an Italian Carabinieri officer passing away with him.

The attack was supposedly an attempt to kidnap the ambassador, the attackers, failing to do so, ended up killing them. Attanasio was traveling alongside a convoy of the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP).

Mario Draghi, Italy’s Prime Minister has also put out a statement that expresses his condolences to the families of the Italian ambassador, and the soldier, Vittorio Iacovacci. The World Food Programme also suffered a loss in the attack with one of their drivers being killed in the attack, with others sustaining injuries.

The convoy was on their way to visit one of the local schools to conduct a feeding program in Rutshuru, when they suffered the attack on Goma, roughly two hours away from Rutshuru. The route was supposedly safe for travel without a security team.
