A Santa Rosa middle school was put on lockdown on Thursday after a 13-year-old student pulled out a knife during a suspected gang-related fight inside a classroom.

According to Santa Rosa police, the fight broke out between three 13-year-old students at Herbert Slater Middle School at around 8:25 a.m.

It was reported that one of the students involved pulled out a large knife during the fight before running out of campus and into the surrounding neighborhood.

The school was put on lockdown.

Police learned that two 13-year-old boys entered a classroom, approached a third 13-year-old boy and started punching him.

The two students who allegedly started the fight fled the classroom but the attacked student followed them into the hallway where he pulled out a large kitchen knife and tried to lunge at one of his attackers.

A teacher arrived and the students fled in different directions.

Teachers followed the student who had a knife and demanded he give it up.

The knife was recovered by the school faculty.

All three students were eventually detained and arrested. Police said the fight may have been gang-related.
